This weekend in Charlotte (Sep 25–27)

Fall is finally here. After a wet, cool, breezy stretch that felt like autumn slammed the door — rain, mist, and temps stuck in the 60s midweek — the pattern has flipped. Cooler, drier air is in, mornings are crisp (upper 40s to low 50s), and the weekend looks like the outdoor window Charlotte parents have been waiting for.

Weather this weekend (Charlotte area): Friday tops out in the low to mid 70s and stays comfortable. Saturday and Sunday warm toward about 80 in the afternoon with low humidity and little rain in the forecast. Pack a light layer for those cool mornings; by midday you should be fine in short sleeves at the festival, farm, or maze. Forecasts move — peek at the radar before you leave, especially if you are heading west toward Shelby or Spencer.

This is a stacked weekend: Festival in the Park at Freedom, Dino Days in Gastonia for the Hall of Dinosaurs opening, Day Out With Thomas up in Spencer, and pumpkin / maze season fully underway. Shelby Corn Maze is still rolling from last weekend if you want a bigger farm day west of town.

If you only pick one: Festival in the Park if you want free and close; Schiele Dino Days for the museum weekend; Thomas if the kids are deep in train mode and you can swing the drive and tickets; Hodges if you want pumpkins Saturday without a ticket wall at the gate. Shelby is the carryover maze from last weekend when you want a full farm afternoon.

  • Cost: Free entry; weekend parking $5; hayrides $5 (ages 2 & under free on hayrides)
  • Practical: Opens Sat Sep 26; daily 9am–6pm through Oct 31. Animals and pumpkins without a main ticket. Easy add-on after something else east of town.

  • Practical: Season runs Sep 19 – Nov 1. This weekend: Fri 4–10pm · Sat 10am–10pm · Sun 2–8pm. Eight-acre maze, pumpkin patch hayride, jumping pillow, and a long list of courtyard activities. Rain-or-shine unless lightning pauses things — check their Facebook if the sky looks ugly. Carryover from last weekend if you missed it or want another farm day west of town.
